Über den Umweltfaktortyp wird eine Zuordnung zu einer Kategorie aus dem ValueSet Umweltfaktortyp durchgeführt. Dies ist vor allem relevant, wenn kein passender Code für einen Umweltfaktor gefunden wird und der Umweltfaktor mittels Freitext ausgedrückt wird.

Weitere Erläuterungen zur Auswahl und Verwendung der ICF-Klassifikation: Aufgrund der geringen Auswahl an SNOMED CT®-Codes im Abschnitt der Lebensstilfaktoren wurden andere Terminologien in Betracht gezogen. In der internationalen Recherche konnte ICF (International Classification of Functions, Disability and Health) die relevanten Codes abbilden, sodass folglich diese Klassifikation als Primär-Code-System für die ValueSets in den Elementen Aktivitätstyp, Umweltfaktortyp, Lebensstilfaktortyp und Funktionsbeurteilungstyp ausgewählt wurde. Es existiert eine deutsche Übersetzung der ICF, die vom Deutschen Institut für Medizinische Dokumentation und Information (DIMDI) im Jahr 2005 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Auswahl des Code-Systems wurde mit dem Bundesministerium für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte (BfArM) abgestimmt.
